Thank Christ.

28/02: How the fuck does Milla Jovovich go from "Not-Attractive" to "Goddess" in every film?

Posted by: AntoneHenry
So I'm about to watch Resident Evil: Apocalypse with my roomie and our buddy James. They're talking about how hot Milla Jovovich is, and I'm thinking, "She looks funny, I'm not getting it." Well by the end of the movie I'm salivating and ruining a perfectly good pair of boxer-briefs over the fact that I now think this is the most beautiful woman I've ever laid eyes on.

She's not even the type of girl I usually like. She's got such a skinny and manly build. I like big hips, a big booty... but after about a half-hour of her kicking, shooting, punching, flipping... I'm ready to grab the nearest bottle of lotion and put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my doorknob.

27/02: Streetlight Manifesto - Keasby Knights

Category: Upcoming Releases
Posted by: AntoneHenry
A contribution from Antone:

Streetlight Manifesto features ex-members of Catch-22, is basically really good and fast ska-punk. Anyway, I just read that they are re-recording "Keasby Knights" the Catch-22 album, which I thought was a weird move, but I would love to see songs off of it performed live as well as Streetlight songs in one show.

I guess their motivation for re-recording "Keasby" is the front man always thought it could be better produced and made tighter. I'm excited for the release, it's scheduled March 7th, and I'm picking it up where-ever I can. I suggest you check em out HERE! My favorite song is "Point/Counterpoint." <3

26/02: The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

The Go! Team is what it would sound like if the cast of '70s-era Sesame Street started an indie rock band and played pep rallies for local sports teams. The music is upbeat, catchy, fun and energetic. Samples of kids doing cheerleading drills are worked into the music, as are beats and organ riffs from old records. Beside the traditional instruments of guitar, bass and drums there is a whole slew of instrumentation in the mix: horns, flutes, auxillary percussion, etc. The only vocals on here are the occasional soulful singing. I'm not sure if it's an actual vocalist in the band, or samples from soul records. Regardless, it sounds pretty cool. The recording is somewhat lo-fi (kind of like Beastie Boys records) but still sound just right for this particular band. This is feel-good, fun time music.

26/02: Die Electric! - Push Pull

Die Electric! are a Minneapolis punk rock trio comprised of three guys who have certainly put their time in (notably Dave Gardner who was in the seminal Selby Tigers). There are two distinct vocal styles going on here: Brian Shuey yelps and howls while Dave Gardner does a more burley bulldog singing-shout. They play off each other in a call/response manner and it works pretty well. The songs are extremely simple, sticking to the less-is-more equation. Their brand of punk also has a traditional rock and roll flare to it. The stand-out tracks are "Aries" and "Thugs". Check this out if you're into anything Swami Records have released or if you're in the mood for some simple, fun punk rock and roll.

26/02: Harp & Finial - Earthquakes Are Easy

I'm starting to learn that whenever people hand me a CD and insist, "You'll love this!" they are usually wrong. I think that I need to fall in love with a band on my own, w/out it being forcefed to me, because then i just feel like i'm trying to like something as to not dissappoint someone whose opinion I value.

Such is the case with Harp & Finial. My good friend Josh Korea really wants me to love this band. He even said, "think Built to Spill There's Nothing Wrong With Love ear. The problem is that Doug Martsch is an incredible lyricist and songsmith and H&F are not. While yes, you can hear the BTS influence, it's not even comparable as far as quality music is concerned.

This shit is just super annoying and very difficult to listen to. I'm trying to like it, but i just can't. It's simply not very good. I mean, they're good musicians, and they're quirky enough to not be mainstream schlop, but damnit this stuff is just not palatable at all. In fact, it frustrates the hell out of me. There are no hooks at all. No clever lines. Just nothing that I can really latch on to.

Sorry Josh. Pass. You can have your CD back now.

Honestly, just go buy a Muse record. It's going to be a hell of a lot better than this immitation of them.

24/02: The Shades

Category: Album Reviews
Posted by: tommyrehbein
These guys play indie-pop that sounds like it could have come from the year 1966. There are garagey drums, jangley guitars, tambourines and lots of organ. It's even recorded in a manner that adds to itheir vintage style. The Shades remind me a lot of Beulah. The track, "Let's Hear It For The Holy Spirit" pays homeage to The Beatles Sgt. Pepper era. There are a lot of "bah bah bah" and "ooh-ahhhh" background vocals lower in the mix which sound really nice. Lead vocalist Brett Sawyer is a very good singer, so i wish he wouldn't bury his voice in lo-fi effects so much. All of the songs are under two minutes, which really add to their charm. The songs are super catchy and well written. If these guys got a little help w/ mixing/mastering from a seasoned enigineer, they'd seriously have a hit indie record on their hands. Still, this demo is pretty great. Check out www.myspace.com/theshadesmn for ordering information.

23/02: myspace music

Hi, I'm Tommy Rehbein and I'm somewhat of a "wacky guy". Being such, Antone invited me to write some reviews 'n' shit. Since I all ready write album reviews at www.30music.com, i wanted to do something a little different here.

With the advancement of the information age and furthermore, Myspace (a place for friends), a few things have become painfully obvious: a) Any random dork with a laptop possessing garage band can make really shitty imitations of the Postal Service. b) Any kid w/ an acoustic guitar and a Connor Oberst fettish can now be a "band". c) Any band who needs to spend more time learning to tune instruments over making really sweet graphic designs can now hassle the living fuck out every other person alive with cluttering banners to listen to their music (which, honestly, needs work)/add them as friends/go see them play in Fargo, ND (when you live in California), etc.

Well, know that when you release your music to the public, and posting it on myspace counts, you are henceforth open to accept crisicism along with the possibility of praise from said public.

With that in mind, I shall do searches under Myspace's music "band name" link by typing random words in the "key word" box. Then I will review what I find.

The first word is, "amish".

23/02: Brangelina Twins

So I've been thinking. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have put a bun in the oven that's due in about three months. I think the following scenario basically has to happen when two people as fucking gorgeous as Angelina and Brad create a child.

Until then, enjoy this. I'll add to it as i ask more people the riddle.

The ultimate question is as follows: "Does a guy recieving anal have an erection?"
I asked some buddies and old friends, and posted my funniest answers.

22/02: Don't Be Mother Nature's Bitch

Posted by: AntoneHenry
Let me just say, i'm scared. I think mother nature is trying to get her revenge on me. After years of littering, so my car stays clean and i don't have to bring my trash upstairs, mother nature just tried to off me because of it. I'm convinced. She's nasty recently, wiping out new orleans because she's racist (don't believe me? see AIDS). Also, bitch slapping those
communities around the indian ocean killing over 200,000 people! And even just today! 1500 to 2000 people missing in a mudslide in the Philippines.
